Berkeley On-Line Lectures and Demonstrations (BOLD) develops and delivers online continuing education and certification courses for optometrists. Courses feature leading optometrists and ophthalmologists from UC Berkeley School of Optometry and other institutions.
BOLD currently offers these courses:
- A 24-hour online course on the detection, diagnosis, treatment, and management of glaucoma. See samples of the video lectures.
- A 16-hour online course in glaucoma case management.
- A 16-hour Grand Rounds Course for glaucoma case management is available at the UC Berkeley campus.
Glaucoma Certification
ODs in California who successfully pass BOLD courses will receive credit toward Glaucoma Certification. All courses are in compliance with the Glaucoma Law SB 1406, which states that California optometrists who are glaucoma-certified will be able to treat and manage patients with glaucoma. Details of SB 1406 are available from the California State Board of Optometry.
CE Credit
Optometrists who choose not to seek Glaucoma Certification may take 8, 16, or 24 hours of the 24-hr Course solely for CE credit. Either taking the course for Glaucoma Certification or solely for CE credit, all ODs may apply their hours to the CE requirement for optometric licensure in California. ODs who are already Glaucoma Certified are encouraged to refresh their knowledge and learn about recent advances and developments in glaucoma.

Online Anytime
Courses are structured in brief video segments. A participant may choose to watch one short segment or several hours at a time. The course can be taken at the person's own pace, at any time of the day or night, 24/7/365. ODs may rewind or review earlier segments as often as they wish. The BOLD Program will monitor where ODs stopped so they may easily resume the program. They will have one year from the date of enrollment to complete an online course.
Questions and Exams
True/false questions are provided throughout the lectures, and explanations are provided to enhance the learning experience. The same information is reflected in the multiple choice exam given at the end of each 8-hour section to demonstrate the optometrist's understanding of the material. ODs who do not pass the exam may retake it.
